| One can distinguish between two different types of programming: |
| Teach-in: |
| First of all the keybaord is switched into a programming mode. Then the key which is to be programmed is pressed. Next the data, which is to be executed by the programmable key is entered on an external keyboard that is directly connected to the programmable keyboard. |

| Advantages: |
- The keybard kan be programmed "on-the-fly" and does not require any software to operate.

| Disadvantages: |
- The programming can not be transferred to other keyboards.

| Programming by software: |
| A software is installed and the desired layout of the programmable keyboard is designed on the PC and uploaded to the keyboard. |

| Advantages: |
- The layout can be saved locally and uploaded to any number of keybaords of the same model.
|
| Disadvantages: |
- A software must be installed according to the operating system being used.
|
| Programming software vary between the various keybaord producers. |
